Luxembourg Stock Exchange and Financial Regulator Unite to Promote Investor Education and Protection
In celebration of the International Organization of Securities Commissions’ (IOSCO) 5th World Investor Week, the Luxembourg Stock Exchange (LuxSE) and the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) came together to highlight the importance of investor education and protection in Luxembourg.
Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy Ceremony
As part of this initiative, LuxSE CEO Julie Becker and CSSF Director General Claude Marx co-hosted a Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy ceremony at the exchange. The event aimed to strengthen public awareness of the significance of financial literacy in Luxembourg, with a particular focus on sustainable finance knowledge and awareness.
Importance of Investor Education
“Investor education is an essential part of investor protection, which is at the core of our mission as an exchange,” said Julie Becker. “Financial literacy helps strengthen confidence and trust in financial markets, and this is crucial to mobilize funding for the transition to a low-carbon and more inclusive economy.”
CSSF’s Efforts in Promoting Financial Education
The CSSF has been actively working on promoting financial education, including launching a training program on e-banking for the elderly population in Luxembourg in collaboration with the Ministry of Consumer Protection, the Ministry of Digitalisation, the ABBL Foundation for Financial Education and ErwuesseBildung. “The CSSF cares about their financial inclusion and financial autonomy,” emphasized Claude Marx.
Initiatives to Boost Knowledge on Sustainable Finance
The ceremony also showcased various initiatives aimed at boosting knowledge on sustainable finance in Luxembourg. The LGX Academy, a joint initiative between LuxSE and House of Training, has seen significant success over the past year, training around 200 course participants from diverse institutions such as private banks, multilateral development banks, research centres, consultancies, asset managers, stock exchanges, and university students.
Other organizations, including CARE Luxembourg, have also launched new training offerings focused on sustainable finance certification. “These initiatives illustrate the close cooperation on the topic of education among Luxembourg institutions across different sectors,” said Julie Becker.
Global Initiative
The Ring the Bell for Financial Literacy campaign is a global initiative celebrated by around 80 stock exchanges worldwide, aiming to raise public awareness and promote financial literacy globally. LuxSE has been actively involved in this effort, establishing the LGX Academy in May 2020, which provides courses on sustainable finance to financial professionals and students in and beyond Luxembourg.
Conclusion
Overall, the event demonstrated the commitment of Luxembourg’s financial sector to promoting investor education and protection, as well as the country’s dedication to supporting a low-carbon and more inclusive economy.
