Kazakh FIU Specialists Receive Basic Training on Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism
Enhancing Kazakhstan’s AML/CFT Regime
In a move aimed at strengthening the country’s anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) regime, 20 specialists from the Financial Monitoring Committee of Kazakhstan recently received basic training on AML/CFT. The three-day workshop was held in Astana from January 20 to 22 and organized by the World Bank/UNODC in cooperation with the OSCE Centre in Astana and the Kazakh FIU.
Training Program Highlights
The training program focused on key topics such as:
- FIU Models and Operational Principles: Participants learned about the different models of financial intelligence units (Fius) and their operational principles.
- Information Requests: Trainees were taught how to effectively respond to information requests from international partners.
- Data Security: Experts emphasized the importance of data security in AML/CFT efforts.
- International Cooperation: The training highlighted the significance of cooperation between countries in combating financial crimes and terrorist financing.
- Financial Investigations: Participants learned about conducting effective financial investigations.
The training was delivered by experts from the World Bank, UNODC, and Estonia’s General Prosecutor’s Office. Representatives from the National Security Committee, National Bank, and Ministry of Justice also participated in the training.

Both trainees and organizers emphasized the importance of the training in developing the capabilities of Fius in the Eurasian region and enhancing the effectiveness of national AML/CFT regimes.
About the Financial Monitoring Committee of Kazakhstan
The Financial Monitoring Committee of Kazakhstan was established under Government Order No 387 on April 24, 2008. The committee coordinates the activities of the Financial Monitoring Department of Almaty, a regional agency, and oversees the effectiveness of its work.
