Svalbard and Jan Mayen: Know-Your-Customer Regulations Take Effect
The Norwegian postal service, Posten, has introduced strict regulatory requirements for parcels sent to and from Svalbard and Jan Mayen. As these archipelagos are considered foreign territories, regular import and export procedures are necessary.
Parcels Require Additional Documentation
- For all parcels containing gifts or goods of value exceeding 5000 kroner, Posten will require a self-adhesive form to be completed by senders.
- The form can be obtained from Posten’s website.
- A customs invoice must be printed and attached to the consignment.
Norgespakke Surcharge Applies
Posten has introduced a surcharge for parcel services to and from Svalbard and Jan Mayen. This price supplement does not apply to parcels sent internally within Svalbard or Jan Mayen. As of January 1st, 2024, only Norgespakke next day will be added for private customers.
Coverage Area Expanded
The surcharge now applies to all parcel products shipped from/to postal codes in:
- Longyearbyen
- Ny-Ålesund
- Other areas of Svalbard

In line with international regulations, all consignments sent to or from Svalbard and Jan Mayen are subject to:
- Export customs clearance when the value of the contents exceeds 5000 kroner
