Know Your Customer (KYC) Process in Ireland: A Guide
The Law surrounding Anti-Money Laundering requires businesses to collect and verify identification documents for anyone applying to use their services, including business address services.
Identifying and Verifying Company Directors and Beneficial Owners
For limited companies and other legal entities, the Know Your Customer rules in Ireland require identifying and verifying the identity of company directors and beneficial owners. This process involves providing personal ID documents along with a due diligence process.
Why Do I Need to Provide My Personal Documents?
As a licensed Trust Company Service Provider (TCSP), we are approved by the Department of Justice to collect this information. The Know Your Customer process is designed to identify and verify the identity of our customers.
Acceptable Photo ID Documents
You can provide one of the following photo ID documents:
- Passport (booklet form)
- Passport (card form)
- Driver’s Licence Note: The photo ID provided must be valid and in date. Expired photo IDs will not be accepted.
Proof of Address
You can provide one of the following proof of address documents:
- Current utility bills (including those printed from the internet)
- Current household/motor insurance certificate and renewal notice
- Official documentation/cards issued by a taxation authority (e.g. Revenue Commissioners in Ireland or HMRC in the UK) addressed to the individual

- Current local authority document (e.g. refuse collection bill, water charge bill) including those printed from the internet
- Current statement of account from a credit or financial institution, or credit/debit card statements (including those printed from the internet)
Note: The proof of address must be dated within 3 months and show your full name, current address, date of the document, and identity of the sender.
Verification Process
In addition to collecting ID and proof of address, we need to verify your identity. This involves establishing that it’s really you and not someone attempting to impersonate you. Verification can be completed through various methods, including:
- ID verification technology
- Provision of additional IDs
- Provision of a selfie + photo matching
- Face-to-face meeting
Data Protection
The documents provided are used solely for the purposes outlined in the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010, as amended, and for no other purpose.
