SAMOA: Financial Crime Victims Support Group Offers Lifeline to Those Affected by Violence

In a bid to combat the scourge of financial crime and violence in Samoa, the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG) has been working tirelessly to provide support services to victims of abuse.

Empowering Survivors

The organization uses a human rights-based approach to service delivery, offering a range of programs aimed at empowering survivors and preventing further harm. Their critical response mechanism is case work, which involves receiving requests from the public or referrals from organizations such as the police, evaluating and determining how to respond.

Support Services

The group provides support to victims through the legal process, informing them of their rights under the law and assisting them in familiarizing themselves with the court process. They have also established a 24-hour free help line, providing victims with access to support whenever they need it.

Addressing Root Causes of Violence

In recent years, SVSG has expanded its operations to address the root causes of violence and social problems in the community, including poverty and lack of education. In partnership with Women in Business Development Incorporated (WIBDI), they provide educational, training, and income-generating opportunities for families affected by financial crime.

Women’s Economic Empowerment Programs

These programs have enabled unemployed women to build livelihood skills and earn an income. The organization’s commitment to providing support services to victims of financial crime has made a significant impact on the lives of many in Samoa.

Temporary Residential Care

The Samoa Victim Support Group is also the sole provider of temporary residential care for abused women and children in Samoa. Their Campus of Hope in Apia offers a range of facilities, including shelters, schools, and counseling services. The campus provides a safe environment for victims to receive support and rehabilitation.

Advocacy Programs

SVSG’s advocacy programs aim to raise public awareness about the human rights of everyone in the community and the illegality of crimes such as incest, rape, sexual assault, and child abuse. They provide counseling programs, including:

  • Anger management
  • Couple counseling
  • Family group counseling
  • Alcohol and drugs abuse counseling
  • Basics in Samoan tradition and culture

International Recognition

The Samoa Victim Support Group’s efforts have been recognized internationally, with funding support from organizations such as the Government of Japan and the Australian Rotary Club. Their commitment to providing support services to victims of financial crime has made a significant impact on the lives of many in Samoa.
