Financial Crime Investigative Techniques Expanded by MACC to Combat Corruption and Abuse of Power
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has expanded its scope of investigations by implementing financial crime investigation methods to effectively combat corruption and abuse of power in the country’s finances.
Collaboration with Other Agencies Crucial in Fighting Corruption
According to MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, this method is not only implemented and pioneered by MACC but also involves joining forces with other agencies such as:
- Inland Revenue Board
- Bank Negara
- Royal Malaysia Police
when investigations involve large-scale or syndicated financial-related cases. Azam emphasized that MACC must use methods and strategies that are in line with the times to effectively combat corruption and abuse of power.
Successes Achieved through Collaboration
Azam cited an example of a successful operation carried out under Op Tropicana, which involved cooperation with foreign agencies and resulted in the busting of international investment fraud syndicates. He stressed that MACC cannot work in isolation, as it would only focus on one thing or angle, and instead must continue to collaborate with other agencies to provide their expertise and legal knowledge.
Effective Execution of Duties Key to Success
Azam emphasized the importance of effective execution of duties among MACC personnel rather than just focusing on recruiting more staff. He noted that MACC starts with existing resources and budget but focuses on cases that benefit the country with available personnel.
Expected Outcomes
MACC’s efforts in implementing financial crime investigation methods are expected to help:
- Check any misconduct in the country’s finances
- Bring high-profile cases related to corruption and abuse of power involving large amounts of money under control
By expanding its scope of investigations, MACC is taking a proactive approach to combatting corruption and abuse of power, ensuring that the country’s finances remain transparent and accountable.
