In a significant development, the Malaysian police have apprehended three individuals suspected of involvement in a multi-million dollar cryptocurrency fraud scheme.

Suspects Arrested and Charges Filed

  • The trio is accused of defrauding over twenty victims out of the equivalent of more than $2,500,000 in cryptocurrencies.
  • The fraudsters lured victims with promises of high returns on their investments, only to steal their funds instead, using cryptocurrencies for laundering the proceeds.

  • The blockchain technology’s unique features allowed for the simultaneous tracing of transactions across multiple cryptocurrency networks, leading to the identification of the suspects and the seizure of illegal funds.

Cryptocurrencies Used in Increasingly Complex Crimes

  • Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf, the director of Bukit Aman CCID, spoke on the increasing use of cryptocurrencies in illegal activities, stating that:

Cryptocurrencies are increasingly being used in illicit activities by Malaysian criminals, who perceive crypto transactions as difficult to trace.

  • However, Datuk Ramli emphasized that the crypto unit was now proficient in identifying diverse transactions with digital currencies using commercial technology.
  • Between 2019 and 2023, nearly 90% of cryptocurrency-related crimes in Malaysia were linked to investment fraud, resulting in losses worth approximately RM417 million (~USD90m).

Notable Cases
