Mauritius Implements UN-Approved Financial Sanctions and Embargoes to Combat Global Threats
The Government of Mauritius has taken a significant step towards combating global threats by establishing two key bodies to implement targeted financial sanctions, arms embargoes, and travel bans imposed by the United Nations Security Council. This development is in line with the country’s commitment to upholding international law and maintaining global peace.
Background
The United Nations (Financial Prohibitions, Arms Embargo and Travel Ban) Sanctions Act 2019 was enacted on May 29, 2019, providing Mauritius with the necessary legal framework to enforce UN sanctions. The Act enables the government to impose targeted measures against individuals and entities listed by or under the authority of the United Nations Security Council.
Types of Sanctions
The three main types of sanctions imposed under the Act are:
- Financial Prohibitions: designed to restrict access to financial resources, freeze assets, and prohibit transactions with listed individuals and entities.
- Arms Embargo: aimed at preventing the supply, sale, or transfer of arms and related materials to listed individuals and entities.
- Travel Ban: restricting travel by listed individuals to prevent them from participating in activities that undermine international peace and security.
Objectives
These sanctions are designed to address threats to global peace, breaches of international peace, and acts of aggression, as enshrined in Chapter VII of the UN Charter. The objectives of these sanctions include:
- Preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
- Combating terrorism and organized crime
- Maintaining stability and security
Contribution to Global Efforts
With these new bodies in place, Mauritius is now better equipped to play a more effective role in upholding international sanctions and contributing to global efforts aimed at maintaining stability and security. This development demonstrates the country’s commitment to international cooperation and its willingness to work towards a safer and more peaceful world.
