New Report Reveals Complex Landscape of Financial Crimes and Trends in Mexico
Mexico City - A new report by Justice in Mexico has shed light on the complex landscape of financial crimes and trends in the country, highlighting both decreases and increases in various types of violent crimes.
Homicides Decrease Slightly, but Remain at High Levels
According to data from the Mexican National Security System (SNSP), homicides decreased by 0.3% in 2020 compared to the previous year, marking a slight decline in a trend that has seen a surge since 2015. However, the overall number of homicides remains exceptionally high.
Other Violent Crimes Show Decreases
Other violent crimes such as extortion, kidnappings, and intentional injuries also showed decreases in 2020 compared to 2019. However, the report notes that widespread underreporting of crimes due to the COVID-19 pandemic may have resulted in higher actual numbers.
Violence Against Specific Populations Increases
The report pays special attention to violence against specific populations, including women and journalists. The daily average of women killed each day was virtually unchanged from the previous year, while 2020 saw a 169% increase in killings of journalists and media workers compared to the previous year.
Pandemic’s Impact on Criminal Groups
The pandemic has had a significant impact on criminal groups in Mexico, with many adjusting to logistical challenges by inflating drug prices or withholding shipments. Some organized crime groups even provided humanitarian aid to local communities during the pandemic, exploiting economic hardship.
Government Policies and Security Cooperation
The report also evaluates the potential impacts of government policies on the country’s security situation, including the continued role of the National Guard and recent developments in security cooperation between Mexico and the United States.
Challenges Remain
Despite these efforts, violence and crime remain significant challenges in Mexico. The report aims to shed light on complex trends and patterns influencing the country’s security situation, with the goal of contributing to more effective solutions to tackle these issues.
