Solomon Islands High Court to Deliver Judgment in Multi-Million Dollar Banking Fraud Case
The Solomon Islands High Court is set to deliver its judgment this week against a former Central Bank officer accused of embezzling over $1.7 million.
Background
Philip Bobongi, a former Central Bank officer, faced more than 30 counts of money laundering and two counts of larceny and embezzlement. The alleged theft took place between 2007 and 2009, during which time Bobongi allegedly stole muted notes from the bank.
Alleged Theft
According to court documents, Bobongi used a portion of the stolen funds to purchase properties. Some of the remaining notes were found in his briefcase during a police search of his residence. The Central Bank had been in the process of destroying the muted notes at the time of the alleged theft.
Trial and Defense
Bobongi maintained his innocence throughout the trial, which took place last year. Despite the evidence against him, he claimed to have done nothing wrong.
