Understanding the Law and My Rights

As I am being interviewed today in relation to an ongoing investigation, I would like to take this opportunity to clarify my understanding of the law and my rights during this process.

Providing Accurate Information

Specifically, Section 177 of the Penal Code states that anyone who knowingly provides false information may be punished with a fine or imprisonment. I understand that providing accurate information is crucial in ensuring the integrity of the investigation.

Right Against Self-Incrimination

As a citizen, I have the right not to be compelled to provide evidence that may incriminate myself. However, I am aware that failing to disclose certain information during investigations but presenting it later as a defense may lead to an adverse inference being drawn by the court.

Rights During the Investigation Process

In addition, I would like to know my rights during the investigation process. Specifically:

  • I have the right to request:
    • Food
    • Drinks
    • Toilet breaks
    • Medical attention
    • Official recording of my requests and amendments to my statement
  • I also understand that declining a polygraph test if requested by authorities may lead to an adverse inference being drawn by the authorities.

Information Required During the Investigation

Lastly, I would like to know what information is required of me during this investigation. Specifically:

  • I have been asked to provide:
    • My personal details, including my full name
    • Home address
    • NRIC number
