New Appointments and Public Holidays Announced

Stanley, Falkland Islands - November 23, 2021: The Commissioner of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, N. J. Phillips C.B.E., has announced several key appointments and public holidays effective immediately.

Immigration Ordinance Amendments

The Immigration Ordinance 1965 has been amended to permit the Immigration Officer, in their absolute discretion, to accept the presence of any person seeking to enter South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands virtually, electronically, or in person at Stanley or other convenient locations in the Falkland Islands. This change will remain in effect until the repeal of the Immigration Regulations 1965.

New Immigration Officer

Joshua Dolen Peck has been appointed as an Immigration Officer for South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, effective November 26, 2021. The appointment is subject to completion of his contract with the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Marriage Ordinance Appointment

Furthermore, Joshua Dolen Peck has also been appointed as a Registrar under the Marriage Ordinance 1949 (as amended by the Marriage Ordinance (Cap 43) Amendment Ordinance 2000). This appointment takes effect from November 26, 2021, and will continue until his office is terminated or he no longer holds the position of Government Officer.

Public Holidays for 2022

Public holidays for 2022 have also been announced. In accordance with Section 73 of the Interpretation and General Clauses Ordinance 1977, the following public holidays have been declared:

New Year’s Day - January 1
Good Friday - March/April (exact date TBC)
Easter Monday - April (exact date TBC)
Early May Bank Holiday - first Monday in May
Spring Bank Holiday - last Monday in May
Summer Bank Holiday - last Monday in August
Christmas Day - December 25

Appropriation Ordinance

The Appropriation (2022) Ordinance 2021 has also been enacted, authorizing withdrawals from South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands funds for use during 2022. The total amount authorized is £7,770,600.
