UN Report Highlights Ongoing Israeli Occupation of Palestinian Territory
A new report by several United Nations agencies has highlighted the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The report provides an update on the situation on the ground and urges Israel to comply with international law.
Devastating Impact of Occupation
The report, compiled by UNFPA, UNICEF, UNRWA, UNSCO, UNSDCF, UN Women, USAID, and other agencies, notes that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory has had a devastating impact on the lives of Palestinians. The occupation has led to restrictions on movement, access to resources, and economic opportunities.
Israeli Settlements Continue to Expand
According to the report, Israeli settlements in the West Bank continue to expand, with nearly 700,000 settlers living in violation of international law. The report also notes that East Jerusalem remains occupied territory, with a population of over 350,000 Palestinians and more than 200,000 Israelis.
Areas of Concern
The report highlights several areas of concern:
- Area C: Under full Israeli jurisdiction, where Palestinians face significant restrictions on movement and access to resources.
- Gaza Border Fence: Tightened since September 2000, restricting Palestinian access to the sea and land near the fence.
- Hebron: Divided into H1 and H2 areas, with H2 under Israeli military control and Palestinian civil control.
- East Jerusalem: Remains occupied territory, with a population of over 350,000 Palestinians.
International Humanitarian Law Applies
The report notes that international humanitarian law applies to the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem. The UN Secretary-General has recalled that the establishment and expansion of settlements in the OPT have no legal validity and are flagrant violations of international law.
Call for Compliance with International Law
In response to the report, the United Nations has called on Israel to comply with international law and to take steps to end its occupation of Palestinian territory. The UN has also urged Palestinians to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Voluntary National Review (VNR)
The report is a Voluntary National Review (VNR) submitted by the State of Palestine under the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).
