Cybersecurity Threats Loom Large Over Oman’s Digital Economy
Oman has launched its National Programme for the Development of the Digital Economy, aiming to establish a comprehensive digital infrastructure and drive economic growth. However, this effort is threatened by cybersecurity risks that could compromise sensitive data, disrupt critical infrastructure, and damage its reputation.
The Growing Concern
According to experts, Oman faces significant risks from cyber attacks, which could have devastating consequences. In fact, the UN Global Cybersecurity Index 2020 report ranked Oman third in the Arab world and 21st globally in terms of preparedness to deal with cyber crimes.
“The need is therefore to remain diligent as individuals, staff, leaders, organisations and policy makers so that there is an effective first defence against attacks and a chance to stop them from happening.” - Kifah AlMahruqi, Cybersecurity Panel at UK Oman Tech 21
Mitigating the Risks
To address these risks, security professionals urge organizations to prioritize developing timely responses to incidents and handle unexpected events with minimal impact on the business. They also stress the importance of involving senior management in conversations about cyber risk and its business impacts.
“The Security Operations Center (SOC) may not speak the same language as the C-Suite or board. Security managers and staff tend to focus on the technical aspects of managing cyber risk and incidents while executives and board members want to know the financial impact of a cyberattack or the reputational damage if classified data is leaked or customer data is stolen.” - Kifah AlMahruqi
National Policy Frameworks
Experts also highlight the need for national policy frameworks that focus on mitigating risks without hindering the vast promise of emerging technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence.
“To ensure the success of cybersecurity in organisations, security professionals need to focus on developing timely responses to incidents and be able to handle unexpected events with minimal impact on the business while maintaining situational awareness.” - Kifah AlMahruqi
Conclusion
As Oman continues to develop its digital economy, it is essential that it prioritizes cybersecurity and works towards creating a robust ecosystem that supports the growth of its digital economy and the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
