Fraudulent Activities Rampant in Gambia’s Online Banking
Warning of Sophisticated Scams
Gambians are being warned of a surge in fraudulent activities in the country’s online banking sector. Scammers are using advanced tactics to steal sensitive financial information, and it’s essential to be aware of these scams to protect yourself.
Phishing: The Most Common Form of Online Fraud
Phishing is the most common form of online fraud in Gambia. Criminals send fake emails or pop-up messages that appear to be from a legitimate source, such as a bank or financial institution. These emails often request sensitive information, such as passwords, PIN numbers, or credit card details, under the guise of updating account information.
Skimming: Capturing Magnetic Stripe Data
Another tactic used by scammers is known as “skimming.” They capture the magnetic stripe data from a victim’s card using a small device installed on an ATM or gas pump. The stolen information is then used to create a new, counterfeit card, which can be used to make unauthorized transactions.
How to Protect Yourself
To avoid falling prey to these fraudulent activities, Gambians are advised to:
- Never share sensitive information: Refrain from sharing login credentials, card details, or PIN numbers with anyone over the phone, SMS, or email.
- Be cautious online: When entering sensitive information online, ensure that the website is secure by looking for “https” in the URL and a lock icon in the browser.
- Review monthly statements: Check your monthly statements immediately and notify your bank of any discrepancies.
- Keep PIN numbers private: Never give out your PIN numbers or write them on your cards.
