URUGUAY CONCERNED OVER ISRAEL’S ACTIONS IN PALESTINE

Uruguay Expresses Concern Over Worsening Humanitarian Conditions in Palestinian Territory

During a recent United Nations meeting in New York, the Uruguayan government expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian and socioeconomic conditions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Israel’s Occupation: A Devastating Impact on Living Conditions

A report by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) highlighted the devastating impact of Israel’s occupation on the living conditions of Palestinians. The commission found that Israel has deployed measures to seize and apply jurisdiction over the occupied territory, leading to widespread human rights violations.

Uruguay Condemns Israel’s Actions

Uruguay’s representative at the meeting, Abdallah Abu Shawish, condemned Israel’s actions, saying they are designed to annex the occupied Syrian Golan and entrench its colonial regime over Palestinian land. He called on the international community to demand that Israel cease such actions and be held accountable for its obligations under international law.

The International Community Must Act

Uruguay reiterated its support for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, which must address the obstacles to the full realization of the right to self-determination and development of occupied peoples. Other countries, including Qatar and Tunisia, echoed Uruguay’s concerns over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, where:

  • Unemployment rates are rising
  • Poverty is deepening
  • The environment is deteriorating

These countries called on Israel to end its prolonged occupation and comply with international law and relevant resolutions.

Destruction of Palestinian Homes Continues

The meeting also heard that since 2009, more than 5,000 Palestinian homes have been demolished by Israeli authorities, impacting hundreds of thousands of people. The reconstruction of homes severely damaged or destroyed by Israeli military operations has been hampered by:

  • Constraints on the delivery of construction materials to Gaza
  • A lack of funding

Uruguay’s Commitment to Promoting Peace and Stability in the Region

Uruguay’s Foreign Minister, Fernando Lorenzo, said that his country is deeply concerned about the situation in Palestine and will continue to support international efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
