Paraguay Strengthens Workplace Safety with Comprehensive Compliance Training

Paraguay has implemented a robust regulatory framework to bolster occupational safety and health (OSH) standards. The Ministry of Justice and Labour plays a crucial role in formulating, implementing, and enforcing OSH laws.

Key Regulations and Requirements

Employers must adhere to the following regulations:

  • Provide Hazard-Free Workplaces: Ensure workplaces are free from recognized hazards.
  • Conduct Risk Assessments: Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards.
  • Implement Preventive Action Plans: Develop and implement plans to mitigate identified risks.
  • Comprehensive Health and Safety Training: Mandatory training for workers on hazard identification, safe procedures, and worker rights.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Employers must provide and maintain PPE at no cost to workers in workplaces with more than 50 employees.

Inspections and Enforcement

The Occupational Safety and Hygiene Directorate conducts regular inspections to monitor compliance with OSH laws. Non-compliant employers may face:

  • Warnings: Formal notices of non-compliance.
  • Fines: Monetary penalties for non-compliance.
  • Temporary Work Stoppage: Temporary suspension of work operations.
  • Closure: Severe cases of non-compliance may result in workplace closure.

Workplace Accidents and Investigations

Employers are required to:

  • Report Severe Accidents: Report severe work-related accidents and injuries within a specified timeframe.
  • Conduct Internal Investigations: Investigate workplace accidents to identify root causes and implement corrective measures.

Compensation Claims and Support

Injured workers or their dependents can file claims with the Social Welfare Institute (IPS) for:

  • Temporary Disability Payments
  • Permanent Disability Pensions
  • Medical Treatment
  • Rehabilitation
  • Survivors’ Benefits in case of death

Employers are required to maintain detailed records of workplace accidents and injuries.

By prioritizing OSH standards and compliance training, Paraguay aims to create a safer working environment for its citizens.
