Campaign to Increase Parliament Term from Four to Five Years Falters
Push for Longer Parliamentary Terms Met with Resistance
Honiara, Solomon Islands - A bid to extend the term of each parliament from four to five years has been withdrawn amidst growing demands for accountability and transparency in the country. Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI), a local civil society organization, had been advocating for increased parliamentary terms as part of its efforts to promote good governance and democracy.
Advocacy Efforts Meet Resistance
The organization engaged with various stakeholders, including community leaders, women’s organizations, and youth groups, to raise awareness about the importance of accountability and transparency in government. However, their advocacy efforts were met with resistance from some quarters, leading to the withdrawal of the proposed bill.
Focusing on Other Key Issues
TSI has since shifted its focus to other key issues, including government bills and policies that affect the lives of ordinary citizens. The organization remains committed to promoting accountability and transparency in Solomon Islands and has built strong partnerships with local media outlets, community governance structures, and civil society organizations.
Empowering Young People
In recent years, TSI has empowered young people to demand accountability from their leaders through its Youth for Democracy Camps, which were launched in 2021. Over 600 applications have been received, inspiring a new generation of leaders committed to promoting transparency and accountability in Solomon Islands.
Global Recognition
TSI’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. Journalists and TV crews from as far away as Switzerland, the USA, and Germany have featured the organization’s work in their reports, highlighting its commitment to transparency and accountability.
Effective Advocacy Approach
The organization believes that by inspiring young leaders and empowering them to demand accountability from their leaders, it can help catalyze lasting change in Solomon Islands. TSI’s advocacy approach has been recognized for its effectiveness in promoting positive change in the country.
Commitment to Good Governance
As the country continues to navigate the challenges of good governance and democracy, TSI remains committed to its mission of promoting transparency, accountability, and integrity in public life.
