NAURU PORT DEVELOPMENT PROJECT SET FOR EXPANSION

Nauru Port Development Project Expands Facilities with Focus on Environmental and Social Sustainability

The Nauru Port Development Project (PPTA) is set to expand its facilities over the coming years, prioritizing minimizing environmental and social impacts. According to sources close to the project, there will be no involuntary resettlement of residents around the adjacent areas in Location, North, and Aiwo, South.

Mitigating Impacts on Residents

Residents may experience noise, dust, traffic, and restricted access to the shore during construction periods. To mitigate these impacts:

  • Regular vehicle checks
  • Speed limits
  • Community safety awareness campaigns

These measures are outlined in the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) developed for the project.

Stakeholder Engagement and Benefits

The project’s Safeguards Due Diligence Report highlights the importance of engaging with stakeholders, including local residents, customary landowners, and government agencies. Over 426 family members from seven different lots will benefit from lease payments for their lands.

Customary landowners have expressed concerns about environmental damage, erosion, oil spills, and truck traffic. To address these concerns:

  • A separate meeting has been scheduled with international specialists to discuss potential mitigation measures

Safety Measures and Community Access

Nauru Port Authority (NPA) CEO explained that the new wharf will be fenced to ensure safety for residents, particularly children who currently swim in the area. Access to a nearby beach will also be made available for swimming and fishing.

Transparency and Community Engagement

To ensure transparency and community engagement:

  • Regular updates on environmental and social performance
  • Semi-annual safeguards monitoring reports
  • Information bulletins

The project’s decision body, the NPA Board of Managers, will oversee awareness and consultation activities. Customary landowners have expressed interest in being represented on the NPA Board of Governors.

Project Goals and Expectations

The PPTA aims to provide a safer and more efficient port facility for Nauru, while minimizing impacts on the environment and local communities. With its focus on community engagement and transparency, the project is expected to benefit both the nation and its residents.
