Saint Helena Government Seeks Marine Compliance Officer

The Saint Helena Government’s Environment, Natural Resources and Planning department has announced a vacancy for a Marine Compliance Officer, a crucial role in ensuring the island’s marine environment remains protected and regulated.

Job Responsibilities

As part of the department’s Marine Enforcement Section, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Engaging with marine stakeholders to provide advice on regulation, improving understanding, changing behavior, and developing a culture of compliance
  • Conducting inspections and monitoring of fish landings, checking logbooks, and ensuring compliance with marine regulations
  • Using statutory powers to enter and inspect vessels and commercial premises
  • Identifying and seizing physical evidence of marine crime
  • Carrying out investigations, gathering evidence, building prosecution files when infringements are suspected, and securing prosecution where necessary
  • Preparing written witness statements and appearing in court as a witness when required

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and/or equivalent level of experience:

  • GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above
  • A valid Saint Helena Drivers Licence (A & C)
  • Previous working experience in an enforcement role
  • Resilience in working outdoors for long periods
  • Knowledge of St Helena’s marine environment and relevant legislation is also desirable
