Government’s Commitment to Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development

In a bid to strengthen its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development, the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) has launched a series of compliance training programmes for stakeholders.

  • Fisheries Management: Fostering effective management and conservation of fisheries resources.
  • Tourism Development: Promoting sustainable tourism practices that support the territory’s unique environment.

Importance of Compliance Training Programmes

The launch of the compliance training programmes comes at a time when the GSGSSI is facing new challenges, including the impact of climate change on its delicate ecosystem. The government believes that by investing in compliance training, it can ensure that all stakeholders are equipped to respond effectively to these challenges and contribute to the territory’s sustainable development.

Recent Initiatives by the GSGSSI

  • First Stakeholder Meeting since 2019: Held in July, where officials welcomed friends and colleagues to discuss recent achievements, ongoing work plans, and future aspirations.
  • Publication of Fees and Charges for 2024-25 Austral Summer Season: An increase aimed at ensuring that the government can continue to provide outstanding stewardship and protect the territory’s unique environment.
  • Call for Proposals under Darwin Initiative Funding Scheme: Aims to support science-based projects that contribute to environmental management and conservation.

GSGSSI’s Commitment to Environmental Management

The GSGSSI is committed to promoting best-practice environmental management and supporting the active management and good governance of the territory. Through its compliance training programmes, the government hopes to empower stakeholders to play a more effective role in achieving these goals.
