South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands: New Research Plan Launched to Support Compliance Initiatives in Marine Protected Area

Introduction

A new Research and Monitoring Plan (RMP) has been unveiled to aid the management of the South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands Marine Protected Area. This plan is a crucial step towards ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, as announced in the January edition of the South Georgia Newsletter.

Objectives of the Research and Monitoring Plan

  • Enhance understanding of the marine ecosystem
  • Assess changes in biodiversity
  • Provide information to evaluate the effectiveness of the Marine Protected Area (MPA) in relation to its conservation and management objectives
  • Serve as a framework for collecting, accessing, and analyzing data, including baseline information and indicators

Background

The MPA was designated in 2012 to conserve the region’s rich marine biodiversity and provide a framework for environmental management and research. The new RMP is part of an ongoing effort to ensure evidence-based sustainable management, building on previous research and monitoring initiatives.

Collaboration and Funding

The RMP was developed in collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey and funded by the UK Government’s Darwin Plus Initiative. This partnership demonstrates a commitment to science-based decision-making and effective conservation efforts.

Key Research Questions and Objectives

  • Assess specific threats to biodiversity, including climate change, fishing, invasive species, tourism, and scientific activities
  • Provide information to evaluate the effectiveness of the MPA
  • Inform enhanced management as required

Integrated Online MPA Data Portal

An integrated online MPA Data Portal is also being developed as part of the Darwin Plus project. This portal will bring together a geographic information system (GIS) and information on ecology, physical environments, human activities, and scientific research.

Conclusion

The new RMP and ongoing research initiatives are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with environmental regulations in the South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands Marine Protected Area.
