IoD Malta Chairman Warns Against Overburdening Blockchain with Regulations
Malta Financial Services Authority to Host Conference on Crypto-Currencies and Blockchain
VALLETTA, MALTA - IoD Malta Chairman Edwin Ward has cautioned against overregulating blockchain technology due to its association with illicit activities such as money laundering, terrorist financing, and tax evasion.
The Dilemma: Innovation vs. Regulation
Ward made the remarks at a press conference announcing an upcoming event, “Crypto-Currencies and Blockchain: Implications for Financial Crime, Money Laundering, and Tax Evasion,” scheduled to take place on November 22 at the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). The event aims to bring together key stakeholders in the financial services sector to discuss the implications of blockchain technology on anti-money laundering efforts.
The Importance of Balancing Regulation with Innovation
Ward emphasized that while it is essential to combat these illicit activities, overregulation could stifle innovation and hinder the growth of the sector. “We must not let the fear of misuse hold back progress,” Ward said. “Blockchain has numerous applications throughout the lawful economy, and we cannot afford to discourage future innovations in this area.”
Conference Highlights
The conference will feature a keynote speech by Professor Robby Houben, chair of company and financial law at the University of Antwerp, as well as presentations from Dr. Christopher Buttigieg, Head of Securities and Markets Supervision at MFSA, Jamy Nigri, CEO of BDX Alliance, and others.
