Romania Takes Major Step Towards Strengthening Whistleblower Protection Laws
===========================================================
Romania has recently promulgated Law no. 361/2022 on the protection of whistleblowers in the public interest, a significant move to enhance transparency and accountability.
A Response to the European Union’s Whistleblower Directive
The new legislation is a direct response to the European Union’s Whistleblower Directive (EU) 2019/1937, which sets minimum standards for whistleblower protection across the bloc. Romania has now become one of the first countries in the region to transpose the directive into national legislation.
What Does the Law Aim To Achieve?
The law aims to provide robust safeguards for individuals who report breaches of EU law to their employers. It is designed to protect whistleblowers from retaliation and ensure that their reports are investigated and addressed properly.
Key Features of the Romanian Whistleblowing Law
- Provides a safe and secure channel for reporting wrongdoing
- Protects whistleblowers from retaliation
- Ensures that reports are investigated and addressed properly
- Establishes legal requirements for anonymous reporting
