Title: Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary Bolsters Fight Against Financial Fraud

The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) is enhancing its capabilities to combat financial crimes in Papua New Guinea through specialized training for its officers. By the end of the year, almost 80 police officers will have completed the Fraud Investigations and Prosecutions course.

Training for Officers in the New Guinea Islands Region

The latest training session took place in Kokopo, East New Britain, for 28 officers from the New Guinea Islands Region. This comes after a similar training held in March in Port Moresby for 29 officers from the Southern Region.

Equipping Officers with Essential Skills

The intensive training strengthens the capacity of investigators and prosecutors to collaborate effectively and handle complex fraud cases. Course instructor, Chief Sergeant Kila Guma, stressed the importance of this training, stating, “This course is vital. Our goal is to equip more officers with the proficiency to tackle fraud and corruption.”

The training covers various aspects, including investigative planning, management, elements of offenses, file preparation, crucial evidence collection, and recent legislation regarding money laundering and proceeds of crime.

Preparing Officers for the Challenges of Fraud Investigations

Senior Constable Tina Nikints, a fraud investigator based in East New Britain, expressed her long-awaited excitement about the training. “When I joined the Fraud and Anti-Corruption Unit, I had no formal training. I relied solely on old court files and felt hesitant to ask for advice. Now, I am determined and confident to put my new skills into practice.”

Similarly, Senior Constable Felicitas Mare, a police prosecutor based in West New Britain, showed her enthusiasm about the training, stating, “This comprehensive course will lead to more effective and efficient investigations and prosecutions. I am confident that I will be able to tackle fraud matters after completion.”

Upcoming Training Session in Mt Hagen

The next training session will be held in Mt Hagen for officers from the Highlands region. This initiative is supported by the Australian Government through the Justice Services and Stability for Development Program.
