KIRIBATI ADMINISTRATION AUTHORIZES VESSELS TO OPERATE UNDER NEW SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
The Kiribati Administration has announced that it will be authorizing vessels to operate under its new Safety Management System (SMS), which aims to ensure the safe and efficient operation of ships.
Conversion to Kiribati Certificates
Vessels may convert their pre-authorization certificates to Kiribati Certificates after verifying compliance with all Kiribati special instructions or additional national requirements.
New Regulations for Document of Compliance (DOC) and Safety Management Certificate (SMC)
The Administration has introduced new regulations for the issuance and validity of:
- Document of Compliance (DOC): issued to a company following an initial verification of compliance with the requirements of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. The DOC is valid for five years from the date of issue.
- Short-Term Certificates: may be issued at the closing of an ISM Code audit to cover the period until a Full-Term certificate is issued. These certificates are valid for up to five months from the date of the ISM Code audit.
New Regulations for Bareboat Charter Registered Vessels
Bareboat charter registered vessels will be subject to the provisions of Section 7.4.3 or 7.4.4 of these guidelines as applicable upon entry into the registry.
