Canada Cracks Down on Sanctions Violators

Detention of Shipment for Alleged Sanctions Violation

Ottawa - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has detained a shipment in accordance with Section 101 of the Customs Act, following allegations that it violates sanctions imposed by various acts. The agency may refer the shipment to Global Affairs Canada (GAC) for further assessment.

Potential Consequences of Sanctions Violation

If the goods are found to be in contravention of sanctions legislation, the CBSA may:

  • Execute a seizure
  • Lay charges
  • Prosecute offenders under relevant acts

Sanctions violators can face serious penalties, including:

  • Fines of up to $100,000
  • Imprisonment for up to one year
  • Harsher punishment for repeat offenders

Importance of Compliance with Export and Import Regulations

The CBSA emphasizes the importance of compliance with export and import regulations. As a spokesperson for the agency stated: “It is crucial that exporters and importers understand their obligations under Canadian law. Failure to comply can result in significant penalties and damage to our international reputation.”
