CONSUMER ALERT: Avoid Fraudulent Transactions Detection in Northern Mariana Islands Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

Saipan, MP - The Office of the Attorney General has issued a consumer alert warning residents of the Northern Mariana Islands to be vigilant against fraudulent transactions and scams during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Scammers Take Advantage of Vulnerability

According to Attorney General Edward Manibusan, scammers are sending phishing emails claiming to be from reputable organizations such as:

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • World Health Organization (WHO)

These emails often contain malware-laden attachments or links that can compromise residents’ personal information and financial security.

Be Wary of Robocalls

Manibusan warned against robocalls offering fake COVID-19 treatments, cures, and work-from-home schemes. Residents are advised to:

  • Hang up immediately if they receive such calls
  • Not press any numbers or provide personal information

Counterfeit Products and High-Demand Goods

The Attorney General cautioned against counterfeit product offers and high-demand goods, including:

  • COVID-19 vaccinations
  • Home test kits
  • Medications or prescription products claiming to treat or cure the Coronavirus disease

No legitimate vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, medications, or over-the-counter products are available to treat or cure the Coronavirus disease.

Tips to Avoid Falling Prey to Scammers

Manibusan recommends:

  • Researching online sellers by searching for their name, phone number, and email address
  • Searching for words like “review,” “complaint,” or “scam”
  • Paying with credit cards instead of debit cards
  • Keeping a record of transactions

Be Cautious When Donating to Charitable Organizations

The Attorney General’s Office urges residents to be cautious when donating to charitable organizations during this time. Scammers may create fictitious charities seeking fraudulent donations, so it is essential to:

  • Research the organization before giving
  • Verify the charity’s legitimacy and reputation
