Financial Fraud Epidemic Hits Guyana: “Package Delivery” and “Romance Scams” on the Rise

A disturbing trend has emerged in Guyana, with criminals using social media platforms to dupe unsuspecting victims into parting with their hard-earned cash. The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has issued a stern warning about the proliferation of “Package Delivery Scams” and “Romance Scams”, which have been on the rise since the COVID-19 pandemic.

How the Scams Work

Scammers are using Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to befriend victims, building trust over time before making outlandish promises. These scammers claim they can deliver valuable packages containing designer clothing, jewelry, televisions, cell phones, and other electronic devices, but request that victims deposit money into a specified bank account or send funds via a money transfer agency.

The Dangers of these Scams

The FIU has emphasized that these scams are not just limited to online interactions, as local associates of the scammers may also be involved in contacting victims and requesting personal information. Once payment is made, the scammers disappear, leaving victims with financial losses and emotional distress.

What You Can Do

If you believe you are a victim of these scams, report it immediately to the nearest police station. The FIU is working closely with reporting entities, banks, and law enforcement authorities to investigate and prosecute these cases. So far, over twenty fraud charges have been filed against individuals involved in these schemes, with additional charges being considered.

A Warning from the Authorities

The authorities have issued a strong warning to anyone approached via email, Facebook, WhatsApp, SMS, or other digital platforms promising gifts or COVID-19 related assistance - beware! Do not share any personal information, transfer or deposit money into unknown accounts, and do not engage in any further communication with the scammers.

A Message from the FIU

The FIU has also issued a stern warning to those perpetrating these crimes - they will be tracked down and held accountable for their actions. If you have been affected by these scams, report it now and let’s work together to bring these criminals to justice.
