Guyana Banking Authority Warns of “Package Delivery Scams” and “Romance Scams”

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has issued a public advisory warning citizens of Guyana to be cautious of “Package Delivery Scams” and “Romance Scams” that are being perpetrated by individuals who are actively involved with international partners.

What Are These Scams?

These scams emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic, specifically targeting victims through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The scammers use a methodical approach to build trust with their unsuspecting victims before promising them assistance in the form of a package containing valuable items.

How Do These Scams Work?

The “Package Delivery Scam” typically involves:

  • Contacting victims via digital platforms
  • Befriending them and then promising to send a package with gifts such as designer clothing, jewelry, electronics, and more
  • Requesting personal contact information and other details from the victim
  • Claiming that payment is required to cover brokerage fees, customs duties, penalties, and shipping charges for the package(s)

The “Romance Scam” involves:

  • Building a romantic relationship with the victim through social media or online platforms
  • Gaining the trust of the victim and then requesting money transfers or other financial assistance

What Can You Do to Protect Yourself?

To avoid falling prey to these scams, remember:

  • Be cautious when receiving unsolicited messages or offers from unknown individuals
  • Never share personal information with strangers
  • Refrain from transferring or depositing money into unknown bank accounts
  • Report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately

Law Enforcement Action

Law enforcement authorities have arrested and interviewed several individuals involved in these scams, with over 20 fraud charges filed against them. Additional fraud and money laundering charges are being considered.

What’s Being Done to Address These Scams?

The FIU is working closely with reporting entities (banks and money transfer agencies) and law enforcement authorities (GPF/SOCU) to address this phenomenon and ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law.

If you believe you are a victim of the “Romance or Package Delivery Scam,” report it immediately to the nearest police station.
