Slovakia Introduces eIDAS Identity Verification for Online Transactions
Introduction of eIDAS System in Slovakia
As of September 29, 2018, residents of designated EU Member States can use their national electronic identification schemes (eIDs) to access online services provided by Slovak authorities. This move aims to facilitate secure cross-border access to digital services and protect against identity thefts.
What is eIDAS?
The eIDAS project is a Pan-European initiative that enables citizens and businesses to use their nationally issued eIDs for accessing public services across EU borders. Currently, over 20 countries participate in this project, which uses a unifying instrument to strengthen the European Digital market.
Key Features of eIDAS System
- Residents of designated EU Member States can access all electronic services provided by Slovak authorities using their national electronic identification schemes (eIDs).
- The level of security required for these services may vary.
- Electronic authentication based on the eIDAS Regulation requires prenotification and notification to the European Commission.
Implementation in Slovakia
In Slovakia, foreign residents with ID cards or residence cards featuring an electronic chip can log into the Central Government Portal (slovensko.sk) and access other portals using single sign-on (WebSSO). However, these identifiers are not automatically linked to their physical identification documents, which may lead to duplicate identities.
Addressing Concerns about Duplicate Identities
Slovak authorities have introduced measures to address these issues, including the use of unique identifiers sent through the eIDAS Node. Foreign residents who lose access to their electronic mailbox can request reactivation by contacting the National Agency for Network and Electronic Services (NASES).
Future Developments of eIDAS System
As the eIDAS system continues to evolve, it is essential to address concerns about duplicate identities and ensure that citizens can securely access online services across EU borders.
