Preventing and Reporting Fraud in Ireland
Staying Vigilant Against Common Types of Fraud
In Ireland, there are numerous types of fraud that individuals may encounter. These include Advance Fee Fraud, Rental Scams, Card Skimming, Online Banking Frauds, Investment Frauds, and others. To protect yourself from these scams, it’s essential to be aware of the warning signs and take preventative measures.
Preventative Measures
Before making any payments or transactions, follow these guidelines:
- Verify identity: Always confirm the identity of the person or company you’re dealing with.
- Don’t transfer money: Never send money to unknown sources. If someone asks for payment in advance, it’s likely a scam.
- Use established agencies: When renting a property, use reputable letting agents and landlords.
- Pay securely: Pay deposits by cheque or bank draft instead of cash.
Reporting Suspicious Activities
If you’ve been a victim of fraud or suspect suspicious activity, report it to the relevant authorities. Here’s how:

Card Skimming
- Inform your bank to close/freeze your card
- Notify your local Garda station
Online Banking Frauds
