Improving Disaster Risk Management in Haiti
A Partnership for a Safer Future
The Haitian government has made significant strides in strengthening its disaster risk management (DRM) system, thanks to a project implemented by the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This three-year project aimed to improve the country’s technical and institutional capacity to integrate DRM into national recovery and long-term development programs.
Key Achievements
- Establishment of a Sectorial and Thematic Table for DRM: A platform that brings together ministries, civil society, private sector, and technical and financial partners to facilitate dialogue and coordination.
- Revision of Haiti’s National Plan for DRM: Supported the revision process of the national plan for DRM, ensuring that it is aligned with international best practices.
- Monitoring Resilience and DRR Indicators: Initiated discussions with the Ministry of Planning on monitoring resilience and DRR indicators in line ministries.
A Commitment to Reducing Disaster Risks
“The Haitian government is committed to reducing disaster risks and improving the resilience of its communities,” said a World Bank official. “This project has helped build the capacity of our partners and facilitated the integration of DRM into national development programs.”
Partnerships for a Safer Future
The project was implemented by the World Bank Disaster Risk Management team and UNDP-Haiti in close cooperation with the Haitian Ministry of Interior and Local Authorities (MICT). The initiative is part of a broader effort to support Haiti’s recovery and long-term development, following the devastating 2010 earthquake.
Why DRM Matters
Haiti’s efforts to improve DRM are crucial, given its vulnerability to natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes. By strengthening its DRM system, the country can reduce the impact of these events on its communities and economy.
- Reducing Human Suffering: Strengthening DRM systems can help prevent loss of life and property damage due to natural disasters.
- Protecting Economic Growth: Effective DRM can minimize disruptions to economic activities, ensuring that businesses and communities continue to thrive.
- Fostering Resilience: A well-functioning DRM system enables communities to recover quickly from disasters, promoting long-term resilience and development.
