Taliban Regime Figures Sanctioned by UN and UK
In a bid to curb the Taliban’s violent activities, the United Nations (UN) and the United Kingdom (UK) have sanctioned several high-ranking officials of the regime.
Designated Individuals
- Maulavi Mohammad Abbas Akhund, 68: Deputy Minister of Agriculture under the Taliban regime. Born in Shah Wali Kot District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, he is a member of the Popalzai tribe and has been listed on the UK sanctions list since February 4, 2001.
- Mullah Mohammad Essa Akhund, 63: Minister of Public Health under the Taliban regime. Hailing from Khas Uruzgan District, Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan, he is a member of the Barakzai tribe and has been sanctioned by both the UN and UK since February 23, 2001.
- Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, 64: Minister of Water, Sanitation and Electricity under the Taliban regime. Born in Mial area, Spin Boldak District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, he is a member of the Nurzai tribe and has been listed on the UK sanctions list since January 25, 2001.
- Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, 66: Held several positions under the Taliban regime, including First Deputy, Council of Ministers, Foreign Minister, Governor of Kandahar, and Political Advisor to Mullah Mohammed Omar. A close associate of Omar, he is a member of the Kakar tribe and has been sanctioned by both the UN and UK since February 23, 2001.
- Mohammed Aman Akhund, 51: Listed on the sanctions list for his affiliation with the Taliban regime. Born in Bande Tumur Village, Maiwand District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, he has been sanctioned by both the UN and UK since February 23, 2001.
Sanctions Aim
These individuals have been designated for their involvement in the Taliban’s violent activities, including:
- Human rights abuses
- Terrorism financing
- Weapons proliferation
