Job Vacancy: Tax Compliance Officer

Introduction

The Jamaica Tax Administration (JTA) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tax Compliance Officer to join its Operations Division. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that taxpayers comply with tax laws and regulations, while also providing exceptional customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce documentary evidence for court cases and testify as an expert witness in criminal prosecutions
    • Investigate applications for relief, exemption, and waivers of property tax and make recommendations
    • Prepare warrants of distress for the court’s signature if a taxpayer defaults on a judgment order
    • Identify accounts that require specialized knowledge and refer them for resolution
  • Participate in periodic compliance surveys to identify unregistered taxpayers, unreported income, and persuade non-compliant taxpayers to become compliant

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting or equivalent qualification
  • Two years’ work-related experience
  • Excellent knowledge of tax laws, regulations, and guidelines
  • Good knowledge of the Financial Administration and Audit Act (FAA) and other financial regulations and guidelines
  • Working knowledge of standard business operations and commercial practices
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

Performance Standards

  • Revenues collected are lodged on a timely basis and accounted for in accordance with the Financial Administration and Audit Act (FAA)
  • Taxpayers’ accounts are constantly monitored and accurately reconciled after each transaction
  • Relevant and accurate documentary evidence is prepared for court cases within the stipulated time

Authority to

  • Collect taxes, duties, and levies
  • Recommend enforcement actions on taxpayers who fail or refuse to comply with tax laws and regulations
  • Enforce compliance through legal administrative actions
  • Contact taxpayers on delinquent accounts
  • Recommend amendments to procedures

Working Conditions

  • High level of risk in dealing with hostile taxpayers
  • Irregular working hours at times
  • Numerous critical deadlines
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, and inclement weather conditions
  • Travel (50% - 60%)
