Trusted Professions in St Helena: Tea Teachers Top the List

A recent survey conducted by the International Business Ethics (IBE) organization has revealed that tea teachers are the most trusted professionals in St Helena, followed closely by other educators and healthcare workers.

The survey aimed to gauge the level of trust and confidence in various professions among employees and residents of St Helena. The results show that:

  • 74% of respondents trusted their tea teachers
  • 64% trusted nurses and doctors
  • Only 33% of respondents trusted their fellow St Helenians

Top 5 Most Trusted Professions

  1. Tea Teachers: 74%
  2. Nurses/Doctors: 64%
  3. Accountants: 56%
  4. Engineers: 53%
  5. Policemen/Women: 49%

Least Trusted Professions

On the other hand, the least trusted professions included politicians and government officials, with only:

  • 24% of respondents expressing confidence in their integrity

Action Plan to Improve Ethical Environment

The St Helena Government has created an Action Plan aimed at improving its ethical environment and promoting a culture of transparency and accountability. Key initiatives include:

  • Establishing Focus Groups: Discuss current procedures and how they can be improved
  • Revising SHG’s Code of Management: Provide clear guidelines on dealing with discrimination, bullying, and harassment
  • Standardizing Policies and Procedures: Deal with conflicts of interest and favoritism
  • Creating an Employee Code Booklet: Includes a summary of the ethics code and information on how to report anonymously when observing unethical behavior
  • Developing an Awareness and Training Program: Refresh employees in ethical behavior and embed cultural change
