Immigration and Travel Regulations for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

Introduction

The following regulations aim to control entry into the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, protecting its ecosystem and enforcing relevant immigration laws.

Permits for Entry

To enter the Territories, individuals must obtain a permit from the Commissioner or Principal Immigration Officer. The application process requires:

  • Personal details
  • Intended dates of entry and departure
  • Information about the vessel on which they will arrive
  • Additional information for work-related permits, including:
    • Details of the contract or arrangement under which they propose to work

Deemed Permission

Certain individuals are deemed to have permission to enter the Territories without a permit:

Part A: Crown Employees and Government Officials

  • Individuals employed by the Crown, British Antarctic Survey, or working for the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Part B: Crew Members

  • Members of a vessel’s crew who must disembark for:
    • Re-provisioning
    • Cargo handling
    • Maintenance

Part C: Individuals Required to Remain

  • Individuals required to remain in the Territories by law
  • Those who land by misadventure
  • Those unable to leave due to illness or injury

Information Required

For individuals intending to disembark, the following information must be provided:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Passport details
  • Permit information (if applicable)
  • Relevant paragraph from Schedule 2 (for deemed permission holders)
  • Health insurance details (for deemed permission holders)

The ordinance comes into force on a day appointed by the Commissioner and repeals existing immigration laws.
