Tunisia Takes a Stand Against Money Laundering: Officials Complete Intensive Training on Cryptocurrency and Financial Crimes

In a significant move to combat money laundering and terrorist financing activities, officials from Tunisia’s Financial Analysis Commission (TFAC), National Guard, and Customs and Economic Brigade have completed an intensive training programme on cryptocurrency and financial crimes.

Funded by the German Development Agency GIZ

The four-day course was funded by the German development agency GIZ as part of a global programme to Combat Illicit Financial Flows. The International Centre for Asset Recovery’s (ICAR) training team delivered the virtual training from October 6-9, covering topics such as:

  • Cryptocurrency Basics: Understanding the fundamentals of cryptocurrency, including different blockchains and money laundering techniques
  • Blockchain Analysis: Gaining practical skills in analyzing blockchain data to trace properties purchased with illicit funds
  • Forensic Analysis: Conducting forensic analysis of suspects’ computers to recover stolen assets

Training Results

The training programme has yielded impressive results:

  • Participants showed an overall 81% increase in knowledge after completing pre- and post-training tests
  • A follow-up survey revealed that:
    • 100% of participants rated the course as “excellent” or “very good”
    • Nearly three-quarters reported a “paradigm shift” in their approach to combating financial crimes

Collaboration and Networking

The workshop’s emphasis on collaboration and networking between representatives from different agencies has also fostered greater cooperation among law enforcement authorities.

Staying Ahead of Criminals

As cryptocurrencies continue to pose a significant threat to global anti-money laundering efforts, awareness of how these technologies work is crucial for detecting cases more quickly. With the training completed, TFAC and other relevant authorities are better equipped to stay ahead of criminals and disrupt their illegal activities.
