Turkey Removed from FATF Grey List After Successful AML/CFT Reforms
Major Milestone in Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Efforts
ANKARA, TURKEY - The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has officially removed Turkey from its Grey List after the country made significant progress in strengthening its anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CFT) regime.
Significant Progress in AML/CFT Reforms
According to FATF officials, Turkey has undertaken more complex money laundering investigations and prosecutions that align with identified risks. The country has also conducted parallel financial investigations in terrorism cases, prioritizing investigations and prosecutions related to UN-designated groups.
Completion of Action Plans
Turkey completed its Action Plans to address strategic deficiencies identified by FATF within agreed-upon timeframes. The country will continue to work closely with FATF and other international partners to further strengthen its AML/CFT regime.
Technical Assistance from EU Global Facility
In recent years, the EU Global Facility on AML/CFT has provided technical assistance to Turkey to help improve its compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing standards. This support included a scoping mission in February 2022, which identified areas for improvement and led to the development of a tailored technical assistance work plan.
Bilateral and Regional Activities
Turkey is actively engaged in bilateral and regional activities aimed at enhancing AML/CFT cooperation. The country has hosted several workshops and seminars on:
- Sanctions and proliferation financing risk assessment
- Online sessions on sanctions screening for terrorism and proliferation
By removing Turkey from its Grey List, FATF recognizes the country’s efforts to strengthen its AML/CFT regime and improve international cooperation in this area.
