Uganda’s Director of Public Prosecutions Unveils Five-Year Plan to Combat Crime and Enhance Justice System
Kampala, Uganda - The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo has launched a new five-year strategic plan aimed at combating crime in Uganda and enhancing the country’s justice system.
Objectives of the Plan
The plan, which runs from 2020/21 to 2024/25, is designed to:
- Ensure the efficient prosecution of cases
- Reduce case backlogs
- Enhance anti-corruption measures
According to Abodo, the office is committed to contributing to peace, justice, and security in the country through efficient prosecutions. The plan will guide prosecutorial agencies in Uganda to conduct their duties in a coordinated, cohesive, fair, transparent, and consistent manner.
Praise from Acting Justice Minister
Acting Justice Minister Wilson Muruli Mukasa praised Abodo’s leadership and pledged to ensure that the office of the DPP is sufficiently funded to fully implement the strategic plan. He noted that the office plays a critical role in the administration of justice and its success will contribute to:
- Reduction of crime
- Safeguard of the law
- Protection of life and property
The minister expressed confidence that by the end of the five-year period, the number of cases prosecuted will increase, case backlogs will be drastically reduced, and anti-corruption measures will be enhanced through asset recovery proceeds of crime.
Expected Outcomes
The successful implementation of the plan is expected to lead to:
- A significant social-economic transformation in Uganda
- Improved public confidence in the criminal justice system
- Contribution to the realization of Uganda’s vision 2040
