UN Council Expands Office of High Commissioner to Advance Child Rights
The UN Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution aimed at strengthening the capacities of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to promote child rights and safeguarding, particularly in situations of armed conflict.
Strengthening OHCHR Capacities
The resolution requests the Secretary-General to expand the capacities of the OHCHR to provide advice and technical assistance on issues related to the implementation of the human rights of children. This includes:
- Providing guidance and support to states to ensure that child rights are integrated into their national policies and programs
- Enhancing cooperation with UN agencies, international organizations, and civil society to promote child rights
- Strengthening the OHCHR’s capacity to monitor and report on child rights violations in armed conflict
Reports on Child Rights Implementation and Violations
The resolution also requests the High Commissioner to prepare two reports:
- One report on the implementation of child rights across the UN system, including the guidance note of the Secretary-General
- Another report on the violations of children’s human rights in armed conflict, highlighting best practices and challenges faced by states and international organizations in protecting child rights
Annual Meeting on Children’s Rights
The resolution requests the OHCHR to organize an annual full-day meeting on the rights of the child, focusing on the theme of children’s rights and violations of human rights in armed conflict.
UN Council Condemns Israeli Occupation
The UN Human Rights Council has also adopted three resolutions condemning Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.
Resolutions and Demands
- The first resolution calls upon Israel to end its occupation of the occupied Palestinian territory and reverse any impediments to the political independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Palestine.
- The second resolution demands that Israel comply with relevant UN resolutions and cease all settlement-related plans and activities in the occupied Syrian Golan.
- The third resolution calls upon Israel to cease all actions causing the alteration of the character, status, and demographic composition of the occupied Palestinian territory and the occupied Syrian Golan.
Condemnation of Israeli Settlements
The resolutions condemn Israeli settlements as illegal and urge all states and international organizations to ensure that they are not taking actions that recognize, aid, or assist the expansion of settlements.
