Title: UN Preventive Force in Macedonia: Strengthening Presence and Combating Financial Crimes

I. Mission Update

The United Nations Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP) in Macedonia has seen increased activity since the beginning of the year.
The force, which grew to 1,050 troops, is mandated to monitor and report on illicit arms flows and other prohibited activities under Resolution 1186 (1998).
UNPREDEP’s military component, consisting of two mechanized infantry battalions, military observers, and civilian police monitors, is patrolling borders and community areas with heightened vigilance.
An average of 400 patrols per week are carried out, with temporary observation posts and helicopter patrols employed as needed.

A crucial aspect of UNPREDEP’s mandate is combating financial crimes, specifically arms smuggling.
New techniques have been employed to improve the mission’s ability to detect arms smuggling in the area of operation.
Mobile reaction teams have been established to respond to suspected smuggling activities and gather accurate information on the involvement of arms, ammunition, or explosives.
Although no direct evidence of arms smuggling has been detected, the mission remains vigilant and closely monitors the situation.

Beyond peacekeeping duties, UNPREDEP has collaborated on humanitarian and development initiatives aimed at strengthening the local government and supporting the civilian population.
UN agencies like the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, United Nations Children’s Fund, and United Nations Development Programme are among the international organizations providing assistance in Macedonia.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also offered financial support through an arrangement under its concessional Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility.
