Zimbabwe Demands Evidence from US Over Financial Sanctions Evasion Claims
Fresh Sanctions Imposed by US Target Zimbabwe’s Leadership
In a strongly worded statement, Zimbabwe’s government has condemned fresh financial sanctions imposed by the United States against President Emmerson Mnangagwa and senior officials. The sanctions, which took effect on Monday, target President Mnangagwa, First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri, senior security officials, and businesspeople accused of facilitating state corruption.
Government Demands Evidence to Support Claims
The government has demanded that Washington provides evidence to support its claims of corruption and human rights abuses. “We condemn these malicious statements as completely uncalled for, defamatory, provocative, and a continuation of wanton hostilities against Zimbabwe by the US government,” said George Charamba, a spokesperson for President Mnangagwa. “We demand that the Biden administration provides evidence in support of these gratuitous accusations, failure to which the administration must, without any further delay, withdraw them unconditionally.”
Economic Impact and Government Response
The sanctions are seen as a major blow to Zimbabwe’s already struggling economy, with the government accusing the US of using financial instruments to strangle its economic development. Zimbabwe has long been critical of the US government’s handling of the country’s economic woes, arguing that Washington’s policies have exacerbated the crisis.
- The government is calling on the United Nations, the African Union, and the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) to support its demands for the removal of the restrictions.
- Zimbabwe is also criticizing the US decision to lift a broader programme of sanctions introduced two decades ago, saying that ending the measures cannot make up for alleged human rights abuses committed against Zimbabweans.
Larger Effort by Western Governments
The sanctions are seen as part of a larger effort by Western governments to punish Zimbabwe’s leadership for alleged corruption and abuse of power. However, the government has consistently denied any wrongdoing, accusing the US of using financial instruments to exert political pressure on its leaders.
Tensions Between Harare and Washington Continue
As tensions continue to simmer between Harare and Washington, it remains to be seen whether the US will provide evidence to support its claims or reconsider its stance on Zimbabwe’s leadership.
