Russia and Burma Entities Targeted by US Sanctions

January 1, 2009 - The United States has imposed sanctions on several Russian and Burmese entities for alleged involvement in human rights abuses and support to rogue regimes.

Targeted Entities

The following entities have been targeted by the US sanctions:

  • Russian Military
    • 64th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade (based in Khabarovsk Oblast)
  • Burmese Army
    • 66th Light Infantry Division (based in Pyay Township, Bago Region)
    • 77th Light Infantry Division
    • 99th Light Infantry Division
  • Russian Defense Institutions
    • 71st Automotive and Armored Vehicle Repair Plant
    • 72nd Automotive and Armored Vehicle Repair Plant
  • South African Company
    • 76 Benmore Garden Trust (linked to a US-designated terrorist)
  • Burmese Charity Coalition
    • 101 Days Campaign (designated as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity)

Sanctions Objectives

The sanctions aim to:

  • Restrict the entities’ access to US financial markets
  • Freeze their assets in the United States
  • Subject them to secondary sanctions, which could include penalties against companies or individuals doing business with them
