Vanuatu Tackles Cybercrime with New Partnership
In a bid to combat the growing threat of cybercrime in Vanuatu, the country’s government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Vanuatu Police Force (VPF). The agreement aims to strengthen collaborative efforts between the two organizations on cybersecurity and incident management.
Partnership Signed
The MOU was signed by CERT Vanuatu (CERT VU), an entity established within the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) to address cybersecurity issues in Vanuatu. According to John Jack, Deputy Chief Information Officer to the OGCIO, the partnership is crucial in addressing the borderless nature of cyber threats.
“We found difficulties in implementing directives given by the National Disaster Management Office regarding social media because we lacked a legislation on cybersecurity and cybercrime,” said Jack.
“Part of this MOU involves capacity building, which includes analyzing threats faced by online users with the VPF’s resources.”
Capacity Building and Compliance
The partnership will also see CERT VU working with the VPF to ensure that operations are in line with existing laws, regulations, and policies related to cybersecurity and cybercrime. This includes capacity building, where CERT VU will analyze threats faced by online users with the VPF’s resources.
Call for Partnerships
In addition, CERT VU is appealing to other entities interested in addressing cybercrime and cybersecurity within their working environments to approach them for assistance. The organization believes that working together with partners is vital in meeting the needs of concerned citizens and entities.
Challenges Faced by Vanuatu
The partnership comes at a time when Vanuatu is facing several challenges, including the COVID-19 outbreak and the 5G controversy. CERT VU has urged anyone having concerns regarding internet-related issues to contact them via email, social media, or website for assistance.
Conclusion
With this MOU in place, Vanuatu is taking a significant step towards addressing the growing threat of cybercrime and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens online.
