Macedonian City of Veles: A Hotbed for Trump-Themed Money Laundering Schemes
Veles, North Macedonia, has recently gained notoriety as the hub of a growing network of con artists peddling Trump-themed money laundering schemes. In this city, retired Americans are being lured into investments in “Trump cards,” each bearing an image of former U.S. President Donald Trump, allegedly preloaded with huge sums, promising quick returns and financial security.
The Con of “Trump Cards”
Last September, 86-year-old Ann Bratton, a long-time collector of Trump-related souvenirs, invested thousands of dollars in these cards, offered through encrypted Telegram app channels. Unbeknownst to her, the city of Veles had already gained infamy in 2016 for its production of digital disinformation and fake news during the U.S. presidential election.
The Prolific Producer of Digital Scams
Veles is the birthplace of various lucrative scam industries. Local authorities have openly acknowledged the problem, with Mayor Marko Kolev describing the criminals as “clicksters” who exploit Trump’s former presidency and political comeback promises to attract customers.
The Modus Operandi of criminals
These scammers operate primarily through thousands-strong Telegram groups where they post false advertisements on public channels and offer specific instructions on how to deceive potential victims. They also peddle the false premise that these products will allow them to cash out by withdrawing large sums at ATMs.
Past Deceptive Schemes: Trump Coins and Bucks
In the past, scammers had marketed collectibles like “Trump coins” or “Trump dollars.” They falsely claimed these collectibles would eventually be legal tender in the future. However, the 2022 NBC News report revealed these schemes involved three companies based in Colorado.
Current Scheme: Trump Cards
This Veles-based “Trump card” operation primarily relies on individuals networking through online platforms, with communication conducted through closed Telegram channels and individual sellers advertising on public channels.
Local Response and Concerns
Mayor Kolev is aware of the situation and expresses concerns about the illegal activities. Borce Pejcev, an IT professional in Veles, emphasizes the need for those involved to be cautious, acknowledging that some young people are earning substantial amounts of money through these schemes.
Addressing the Concern: Increased Vigilance and Awareness
Despite attempts to cover their tracks, the continued operation of such scams indicates the need for increased vigilance and awareness among consumers and regulatory agencies. The RFE/RL’s inquiries to the Trump campaign regarding the misleading “Trump cards” and potential repercussions have gone unanswered, leaving the scheme to persist.
