Council Considers Endorsement of Waste Management Strategy
Introduction
The Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands Councils are set to consider the endorsement of two critical documents: the Waste Management Strategy and its accompanying Implementation Plans. The strategy aims to manage waste effectively in the Indian Ocean Territories, and the implementation plans provide a roadmap for achieving this goal.
Report Tabled at Ordinary Meeting of Council
According to a report tabled at the Ordinary Meeting of Council, GHD has compiled separate Implementation Plans for both Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The plans outline short-term, medium-term, and long-term steps for implementing the Waste Management Strategy.
Draft Organic Waste Recycling Pre-Feasibility Assessment
GHD has also completed a draft Organic Waste Recycling Pre-Feasibility Assessment, which assesses the potential for recycling organic waste and reducing residual waste quantities on both islands. This assessment is an important step in developing a comprehensive waste management strategy.
Concerns about Lack of Transparency and Accountability
Despite repeated requests to review and consider further works related to sea dumping, Council is expected to table the documents for consideration of endorsement or not. This move has sparked concerns among some members about a lack of transparency and accountability in the decision-making process.
Request for Simple Majority Vote
The Council is seeking a simple majority vote to acknowledge and receive the report, which includes advice and direction regarding the endorsement of the Waste Management Strategy and Implementation Plan for the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
