Home Occupation Approved for Fresh Produce Packaging on West Island

The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands Council has made a unanimous decision to approve a home occupation application for Lot 139 Nelson Mandela Walk, West Island. The resident applicant will be permitted to use their deck to package and distribute fresh produce on occasion.

Compliance with Local Planning Scheme

The application was deemed compliant with the Shire’s Local Planning Scheme No. 1, which allows for businesses or activities to be carried out within a dwelling house or its curtilage by a person resident in the house, as long as certain conditions are met.

Approved Use and Conditions

The approved use will occupy an area no larger than 50 square metres and will not cause nuisance or degradation of the locality. The applicant is also required to obtain a permit under the Food Act 2008 WA before commencing the business. Additionally, the approval is subject to various conditions, including:

  • Any additional development must be approved by the Shire
  • The home occupation must not occupy an area greater than 30 square metres
