Dominica Fights Back Against WhatsApp Identity Theft Scams

Santo Domingo - The instant messaging platform WhatsApp has become a breeding ground for cybercriminals, with several Dominican personalities falling victim to identity theft scams.

Victims Share Their Ordeals

Communicator Luz García recently took to social media to denounce an imposter using her name, picture, and phone number (809-397-4086). Similarly, panelist Millizen Uribe reported that she was targeted by someone pretending to be her, using her old phone number (809-607-0212).

Uribe recounted the ordeal, stating that after five years of filing a complaint with DICAT, she has yet to receive a response. “I think it’s high time for authorities to take notice of these issues in our country,” she emphasized.

Journalist Darwin Muñoz, aka Sueldo Cebolla, also revealed that he was a victim of identity theft by someone who took out several loans from financial entities without being arrested.

What is WhatsApp Phishing?

WhatsApp impersonation is a form of fraud where cybercriminals steal a user’s account and pretend to be them to trick contacts or ask for bank transfers with high values. Scammers can access a victim’s account if they obtain the verification code sent via SMS or call when installing the app on another device.

What Can You Do If You’re a Victim?

WhatsApp has protocols in place for users who have been scammed. Victims should email support@whatsapp.com, providing full phone numbers, country and area codes, and a description of what happened. Within 48 hours, WhatsApp’s support team will contact the user.

Prevention is Key

As identity theft cases rise on WhatsApp, it’s essential for authorities to take action against these cybercriminals and educate users on how to prevent such scams.

Prevention Tips:

  • Be cautious when sharing personal information or verification codes
  • Use strong passwords and keep them confidential
  • Monitor your accounts regularly for suspicious activity
  • Report any suspicious behavior to WhatsApp support

By taking these precautions, we can reduce the risk of falling victim to identity theft scams on WhatsApp.
