Yemeni Officials Define Needs for Upcoming Technical Assistance Meetings

AMMAN, JORDAN - Yemeni officials have concluded a crucial workshop on government finance statistics (GFS) and public sector debt statistics (PSDS), aimed at strengthening their understanding of key concepts and frameworks.

Workshop Objectives and Highlights

The in-person training session, held in Amman, brought together representatives from the Central Bank, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. The hands-on training covered various aspects of GFS compilation, including:

  • Institutional sectorization
  • Data source quality
  • Bridge table development

Upcoming Remote Technical Assistance Meetings

Following the workshop, remote technical assistance (TA) meetings will be conducted virtually over seven sessions between February and April to further support Yemen’s efforts in improving its fiscal management capabilities.

Programmatic Support Initiatives

In addition to the GFS and PSDS training, METAC has been providing programmatic support to Yemen’s Ministry of Finance through various initiatives, including:

  • Off-site missions
  • Workshops
  • Technical assistance meetings aimed at enhancing:
    • Budget execution
    • Expenditure control
    • Real sector statistics
    • Revenue administration
    • Anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT)
    • Post-clearance audit

Some notable accomplishments include:

  • Development of a mobile phone application to facilitate financial data sharing between the Ministry of Finance and spending units
  • Finalization of commitment control processes and templates, expected to be rolled out in early 2024

The Yemeni officials have defined the needs and dates for forthcoming technical assistance meetings, which will focus on addressing key challenges and building capacity in various areas. These initiatives are critical to supporting Yemen’s economic recovery and development efforts.
